The $100 Billion Storm: 17 Things You Should Know About Hurricane Sandy

Meteorologists are warning that Hurricane Sandy could potentially be the worst storm to hit the east coast of the United States in 100 years.  Do you remember "the perfect storm" back in 1991?  That storm was so bad that Hollywood made a blockbuster movie starring George Clooney about it.  Well, this storm is going to be much worse.  When I first heard about Hurricane Sandy, I didn't make that much of it.  I figured that the east coast would get some wind and some rain and that they would whine about it a bit but that everything would be just fine.  But then I started looking into this storm a bit more.  It turns out that this storm is even larger than Hurricane Katrina was.  The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has categorized the destructive potential of this storm to be 5.8 on a scale that goes from 0 to 6.  So don't be fooled when you hear that this is only a "category 1 storm" or that the maximum winds will only be around 80 MPH.  It is the unprecedented size of this storm and the mind boggling storm surges that it is producing that truly make it dangerous.  It is being reported that Hurricane Sandy is more than 1,000 miles across from one end to the other.

Meteorologists have never seen anything quite like this before, and we are most definitely in unprecedented territory.  One meteorologist is already projecting that this megastorm could cause 100 billion dollars in damage, but the true amount of devastation will likely not be fully known for weeks.  If you live in the northeast part of the United States, you definitely want to buckle up because you are about to get absolutely hammered.

Climate-Changing Methane ‘rapidly destabilizing’ off East Coast, Study Finds

A changing Gulf Stream off the East Coast has destabilized frozen methane deposits trapped under nearly 4,000 square miles of seafloor, scientists reported Wednesday. And since methane is even more potent than carbon dioxide as a global warming gas, the researchers said, any large-scale release could have significant climate impacts. Temperature changes in the Gulf Stream are “rapidly destabilizing methane hydrate along a broad swathe of the North American margin,” the experts said in a study published Wednesday in the peer-reviewed journal Nature. Using seismic records and ocean models, the team estimated that 2.5 gigatonnes of frozen methane hydrate are being destabilized and could separate into methane gas and water. It is not clear if that is happening yet, but that methane gas would have the potential to rise up through the ocean and into the atmosphere, where it would add to the greenhouse gases warming Earth. 

The 2.5 gigatonnes isn’t enough to trigger a sudden climate shift, but the team worries that other areas around the globe might be seeing a similar destabilization. “It is unlikely that the western North Atlantic margin is the only area experiencing changing ocean currents,” they noted. “Our estimate … may therefore represent only a fraction of the methane hydrate currently destabilizing globally.” The wider destabilization evidence, co-author Ben Phrampus told NBC News, includes data from the Arctic and Alaska’s northern slope in the Beaufort Sea. And it’s not just under the seafloor that methane has been locked up. Some Arctic land area are seeing permafrost thaw, which could release methane stored there as well. An expert who was not part of the study said it suggests that methane could become a bigger climate factor than carbon dioxide. “We may approach a turning point” from a warming driven by man-made carbon dioxide to a warming driven by methane, Jurgen Mienert, the geology department chair at Norway’s University of Tromso, told NBC News. “The interactions between the warming Arctic Ocean and the potentially huge methane-ice reservoirs beneath the Arctic Ocean floor point towards increasing instability,” he added. –USNEWSNBC

Corn belt moving northward with climate change

WASHINGTON -- Joe Waldman is saying goodbye to corn after yet another hot and dry summer convinced him that rainfall won't be there when he needs it anymore.

"I finally just said uncle," said Mr. Waldman, 52, surveying his stunted crop about 100 miles north of Dodge City, Kansas. Instead, he will expand sorghum, which requires less rain; let some fields remain fallow; and restrict corn to irrigated fields.

While farmers nationwide planted the most corn this year since 1937, growers in Kansas sowed the fewest acres in three years, instead turning to less-thirsty crops such as wheat, sorghum and even triticale, a wheat-rye mix popular in Poland. Meanwhile, corn acreage in Manitoba, a Canadian province about 700 miles north of Kansas, has nearly doubled over the past decade due to weather changes and higher prices.

Shifts such as these reflect a view among food producers that this summer's drought in the United States -- the worst in half a century -- isn't a random disaster. It's a glimpse of a future altered by climate change that will affect worldwide production.

Officials confirm the crude oil covering the giant sinkhole in Assumption Parish, LA is coming from a massive underground formations(s) of crude oil and gas, and officials don't know how to stop it. In the Napoleonville Salt Dome below the sinkhole, there is an estimated 500 billion cubic feet of gas and 200 millions gallons of crude oil.

A new map of the sinkhole's dimensions was uploaded to the Assumption Parish website at 11:45a ET on October 14, 2012.

Red line: August 19, 2012; Green line: September 21, 2012; Blue line: October 14, 2012; Yellow line is the containment boom marking the former perimeter of the sinkhole.

Official: The question is, is the crude oil that's possibly coming from one of these individual layers from the outside area of the salt dome, how to stop it from entering the salt cavern I'm assuming, and as well as how to stop it from coming to the surface and through the water aquifer?

Gary Hecox, Geologist with Shaw Environmental: I can't tell you how we're going to stop it, right now, I can tell you what we're doing to get to that end. And that is we're talking to experts all over the country and some of them are overseas, who are experts in seismology, rock mechanics and related features. And we're talking to those folks to get their input to help us address that very question you asked. Right now, I don't have any ind of answer. But we are working on, that's on of the things DNR has tasked Shaw to do is be able to look at that as to what created the problem in the first place. And then a second part, what are we going to do about it.

Louisiana Sinkhole Alarms Reported, Seismic Activity Spikes

Louisiana sinkhole area residents reported to Assumption Parish officials hearing alarms over the weekend, but were told by officials that alarms are not going off. The alarm reports coincide with a spike in seismic activity, according to The University of Memphis Center for Earthquake Research and Information (CERI), and also might coincide with resumed drilling into the sinkhole area after Tropical Storm Isaac left it.

Just hearing bells? Alarms heard might link to Bayou Corne sinkhole area seismic activity at Monitors #3 and #9 near Hwy. 70

According to the University of Memphis team's hellicorder charts of two of the six seismic monitors its Louisiana sinkhole team placed in the sinkhole area, monitors # 3 and # 9 at locations near Highway 70 in the Bayou Corne area, have recorded unusually higher seismic activity on September 2.

Those recordings are much higher than on previous days and at other locations that the team of scientists are monitoring in the area, according to the university CERI hellicorder dated graphs.

I have written about this many times. When whales have beached themselves in the Pacific at various Islands, including New Zealand there will be a very large quake within a week afterwards somewhere around that area of the world.

Five calves and juveniles were rescued and taken to a nearby rehabilitation center, according to Carli Segelson of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

She said the others, males and females, died of natural causes or were euthanized.

ISSAC BECOMES CAT 1 HURRICANE 
NEAR GULF COAST MIAMI 

(AP) -- Isaac became a hurricane Tuesday that could flood the coasts of four states with storm surge and heavy rains on its way to New Orleans, where residents hunkered down behind levees fortified after Katrina struck seven years ago this week.

Shelters were open for those who chose to stay or missed the chance to get away before the outer bands of the large storm blow ashore ahead of a forecast landfall in southeast Louisiana on Tuesday night or early Wednesday. However, with the exception of some low-lying areas, officials had not ordered mass evacuations.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Isaac became a Category 1 hurricane Tuesday with winds of 75 mph. It could get stronger by the time it's expected to reach the swampy coast of southeast Louisiana.

7.3 Earthquake Shakes El Salvador

A strong 7.3 earthquake shook an area in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of El Salvador early yesterday. 

US officials said, triggering a brief tsunami alert for Central America and Mexico.

The warning was quickly canceled without indication whether the tidal wave had caused any damage.

The epicenter of the tremor, which occurred at 0437 GMT, was located 111 kilometres south of the city Puerto El Triunfo in El Salvador, according to the US Geological Survey.
